2016 - 2018

Location

Warwick Arts Centre/Edinburgh Fringe/HATCH Festival

Role

Director & Maker

REACTivists were a collective of theatre artists who made work that tested theatre’s capacity to be politically productive and engage meaningfully with contemporary social and political issues.

Our first project 'Hear All About It' saw us create a show a week in response to the news. Hear All About It played at Warwick Arts Centre and was named one of Exeunt's 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Picks. Recipients of the Clive Barker Award for Performance, Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning Grant, and The Lord Rootes Fund.

Our second project 'As it Happened: Contemporaneous Notes' saw 5 writers collaborate to write weekly responses to socio-political events over 8 months. We responded to issues as disparate and wide-ranging as the decline of Carillon, the Syria missile crisis and Lyn Gardner’s lost contract with the Guardian. These responses were then collated and staged in dialogue and juxtaposition to ask urgent questions about our capacity to respond, personally and artistically.

‘At the end a clearly emotional Brooker hugs Soneji – a touching moment that hints at the intense but inspiring process creating a piece this quickly must involve.’ - Sally Stott, The Scotsman

‘A timely reminder that theatre has a role in generating a reaction, a response and a discussion about current affairs.’ - Tim Wilcock, Fringe Review
